Are Waterbed Liners Essential?

Waterbed liners can provide additional protection in the event your water bed mattress develops a leak. Liners are usually made from waterproof materials, and are mean't to catch any water that might spring from leaks that might develop in your water bed. They are placed between the mattress and the actual supports that keep your mattress in place be it a hardside frame or a softside vinyl/foam support.

Some liners may require special hooks or attachments to keep them upright or in place around your water bed. Others, often called stand-up liners, have semi-rigid sides which eliminates the need for any other attachments. They will stand on their own and be ready for your water mattress to be placed inside them. Waterbed liners are available in single, queen, and king sizes, depending on the size of your water bed.

These liners should be checked regularly, as part of water bed maintenance, to make sure that they are still intact and in proper place. Although leaks are quite unlikely under normal conditions and even with regular use of the water bed, it is still a good insurance policy to have a liner. Emptying your mattress and checking the liner about twice a year should be enough, and you could also add conditioner to the water at the same time.

The conditioner is a chemical added to the water in the mattress that serves to kill any algae and bacteria that might grow in there, as well as to keep the vinyl supple. Other water bed maintenance tasks would be to wipe the vinyl top of the water bed clean once in a while, and to be alert for any leaks.

Waterbed liners are just a temporary containment measure in the event of an actual leak, preventing the water from spilling and making a bigger mess. When an actual leak springs, it is often easy to find and repair the leak yourself. Do not drain the water bed it is often much easier to find the leak with the water bed still filled with water. If you drain the water bed, it would be much harder to find the leak that caused you to drain it in the first place!

Begin by drying any water between the mattress and the liner, using a towel. Then check the surfaces of the water bed thoroughly. It is rare for a leak to appear on the bottom surface of the water bed, so check the top, the sides, and the corners of the water mattress carefully to try and find the leak. If necessary, apply pressure on the water bed by pressing down on it or kneeling on it to help you find where the leak is.

Once the leak is found, place a cushion or pillow under where the leak is, to place it above water level and stop water from leaking through it. Then it is a simple matter to cut out a patch of vinyl slightly larger than the leak and use the provided waterbed glue to patch the leak.

So waterbed liners do not prevent leaks, but only provides some damage control. With a liner in place, you should be able to find and repair any leaks before the water gets onto your bed frame and out of hand.

Where Did LCD TV's Come From?

There are three technologies today that are competing to be the number one TV technology: LCD, Plasma, and DLP. LCD will likely be the winning technology.

LCD TV's popularity has recently exploded. The technology is expanding and is now comparable to that of IBM and DVD. LCD TVs are the most up-to-date high-definition televisions with rich picture and color quality. It is a little known fact that LCD technology actually dates back to the year 1888 when the properties of liquid crystallization were discovered by Austrian scientist Friedrich Reinitzer. That would make the concept of LCD TV at least eighty years old! Probably the first efforts to utilize the process of liquid crystallization for commercial products were taken by George Heilmeier, an Electrical engineer from the University of Pennsylvania. Heilmeier also held Ph.D, M.S.E, & M.A's in Solid State electronics from Princeton University. He went on to work with RCA and while working along side Lucian Barton, Joseph Catellano, Joel Goldmacher, Nunzio Luce, Louis Zanoni and Richard Williams he shaped LCD technology, one piece at a time.

Before LCD TV came together as a whole, individual parts of the technology were first developed. Liquid crystal display (LCD) was the result of experimentation with liquid crystals. While dabbling in this technology RCA found that it was possible to create digital clocks, watches, calculators, and so on. The digital alarm that is common to timepieces today is due to Heilmeier's work with RCA.

James Fergason, a graduate from the University of Missouri was passed the baton of LCD technology and developed it further. As the Liquid Crystal Institute associate director at Kent State University, Fergason discovered the nematic field effect, which took the prototype LCD TV displays of Heilmeier's team toward the present-day LCD technology.

Fergason's team unveiled the first LCD TV in 1971, which unfortunately proved to be a disappointment in terms of the "phantom images" that were visible during action broadcasts. After making adjustments and the addition of reverse pull-down correction, the picture quality on modern-day LCD TV is excellent, hardly ever allowing distorted picture transmission. As a result of his work fine-tuning LCD technology, Fergason began his own corporation and forged over 100 patents.

LCD TV today is an amazing experience. At this rate, LCD TVs are sure to replace the old CRTs as the television-watching technology of the future. LCD TVs now are High Definition capable and provide an astonishing viewing resolution. It is also a favorite for individuals with home theaters.

Lego - A History Of These Building Blocks Of Imagination

Lego bricks. Creativity. Childhood. They go together like Mickey Mouse and Disney, wizards and Harry Potter. Lego has been a part of childhood for more than three generations. Nearly everyone under 50 has played with these building blocks of imagination. There is no telling how many engineers and scientists were spawned by these plastic building blocks.

Lego is synonymous with plastic toy bricks that can be easily transformed into buildings, space ships, cars, boats, trains and a myriad of other toys. The key is that the child gets to assemble the toy from the basic building blocks. Each toy can be assembled, disassembled and reassembled in enough new shapes and forms to tickle the imagination and stretch the youngsters creativity.

Today, Lego is much more that the simple blocks invented in 1949. It is toys, theme parks, movies, and CDs. Lego building blocks and other products are distributed around the world. These tiny plastic bricks and the company they have built, are a phenomenon with a success as remarkable as Mickey Mouse.

Lego Bricks Become The Building Blocks Of Fantasy

Where did Lego come from and how did it get to be such an important tool for childhood creativity?

Our story begins in Billund, Denmark. It is 1932. Master carpenter and joiner Ole Kirk Kristiansen opened a new business. His little company makes stepladders, ironing boards and wooden toys. He has just six employees. Nobody could have imagined, but Lego and the little building blocks of imagination had just been born.

Two years later, Kristiansen adopted the name Lego as a brand name for his toys. The name is derived from the Danish words "leg godt," which mean "play well." Ironically, he later discovered that Lego in Latin means "I put together. Lego has truly come to mean "put together" and "play well" in virtually every language. At this time, all of the companys toys were being made from wood.

In 1942, the Lego factory burned to the ground. Kristiansen rebuilt.

In 1947, the Lego Company became the first company in Denmark to buy an injection-molding machine. It began making plastic toy dolls and other toys. The famous bricks were yet to be invented.

It was not until 1949 that the Lego company introduced the Automatic Binding Brick, a little plastic brick, some with four studs and some with eight. At this time, the company was producing about 200 different plastic toys. The Automatic Binding Brick was sold exclusively in Denmark.

By 1950, plastic toys became half of the companys business. Ole Kirks son, Godtfred Kirk, who had worked in the company since age 12, was appointed junior vice president at age 30.

In 1954, Godtfred Kirk made a trip to England to meet with a purchasing agent. The purchasing agent told Kristiansen that he thought the Automatic Binding Bricks lacked an idea and system. Godtfred returned to Denmark. The Lego System was developed. The following year, Godtfred introduced the Lego System at a toy fair in Germany. It was the first time it was introduced outside of Denmark. The results were disappointing. Kristiansen did not give up. Later that year, the Lego System Play was developed. It was an improved system for the Lego bricks. The Lego System Play was exported to Sweden, where it sold well.

In 1959, Lego bricks and the Lego System were introduced in Great Britain, France, and Belgium.

It wasnt until 1961 that Lego bricks were first marketed in the U.S. and Canada. They were an immediate hit and distribution around the world continued. By the end of that decade, 843 people in Billund worked for the Lego company. The first Legoland film was produced. In 1969, the DUPLO system for children under age five was introduced.

By 1970, there were almost 1,000 employees at the plant in Billund.

In 1980, the Educational Products Department was established. The DUPLO Rabbit logo was introduced and a survey showed that 70 percent of all Western European families with children under age 14 had Lego in their home.

As 1990 unfolded, the Lego Group had become one of the worlds 10 largest toy manufacturers and the only toy company of that size in Europe. The others were in Japan and the U.S. More than one million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park and Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen celebrated his 70th birthday. Lego Publishing was renamed Lego Licensing and the LEGOLAND Band issued an LP.

With the beginning of the new century, LEGO continues to grow. It has also continued to remain a family owned company. These days, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the grandson of Ole Kirk, runs the company.

In 2003, a record 1.63 million people visited the LEGOLAND theme park in Billund. The Lego mini-figure celebrated its 25th birthday and the BIONICLE film Mask of Light was released to great success. Representations of the Lego mini-figures Biff Starling and Sandy Moondust are the first earthlings to reach the planet Mars onboard the NASA Mars rovers "Spirit" and "Opportunity." The Lego Education Center in Shanghai opened. The concept was aimed at children from age three to age twelve. There are more than 80 Lego Education Centers in Korea alone. www.lego.com receives around four million visitors per month.

Lego bricks are more than just building blocks. They are learning toys. They build on favorite themes and childrens stories and allow the child to exercise his or her own imagination and creativity. Offshoots of the basic brick include such toys as Lego Robotics, star wars lego, Harry Potter Legos and many other building toys and kids' games. It is truly amazing what a few bricks and a full measure of imagination will produce.

How To Get A Disney Channel acting Audition

Kids all over the country dream of making it big in show business. While acting jobs can be hard to land, it is possible to break into this difficult field by answering a call for a Disney Channel acting audition. Many of today's hottest young entertainers got their start from a Disney Channel acting audition. Though there are sometimes hundreds, or even thousands of people competing for just a few spots, this has been the big break that boosted the career of many performers.

The easiest way to land a Disney Channel acting audition is through an agent. They are made aware of current calls and will have the specifics of the open roles available. It is much easier for inexperienced actors and actresses to get themselves noticed by using an agent than attempting to land these highly sought after roles on their own. While there are ways of getting a Disney Channel acting audition on your own, this is the simplest route.

A great resource that will allow you an inside look at a Disney Channel acting audition listing is the Disney website at http://corporate.disney.go.com/auditions/. Their corporate section has a special page that will let the public know about any open auditions, casting calls, or extras opportunities. While this may not get you the scoop on every Disney Channel acting audition, it can be a foot in the door if you do not have an agent. Check this page regularly to see what auditions are being offered nearest you.

Though winning a part through a Disney Channel acting audition can be difficult, with hard work it is possible. Just take a look at all of the big name celebrities who have become hugely successful after a start on the Disney Channel. Who knows, maybe you could be the next huge success!

5 Good Reasons For Medical Sales People To Call On retail Chemists

In my early days in medical sales, retail chemist calls were a bit of a mystery. On the training course they were presented as a quick way of gaining useful information regarding your local GPs prescribing patterns. As I visited pharmacies to ask what the local GPs were doing it was rather soul destroying to be frequently told to bog off!

What my training course had failed to teach me, is that although calls on retail pharmacy can be invaluable, as a general rule in both life and business, people rarely give you something for nothing!! Up to a point, all I was getting out of the 1 hour a day set aside for chemist calls was a little bit of exercise and a few free cups of tea. It was an experienced peer who suggested I needed to provide my pharmacists with a useful service to build a relationship with them. Once the emotional bank account is in credit, your chances of gaining something back are far higher.

From this point forward, I took a different approach to my calls. Patients are often a little daunted by their visit to the Doctors. As a result, it's only when they reach the chemist with their prescription they realise they actually no nothing about their new treatment, so they ask the pharmacist. At this point, a pharmacist who has recently been briefed regarding the treatment by a medical rep can look very good in front of his customer through being able to explain what it's all about. Every time we had an change in license, a new dosage or any developments, I would visit the pharmacies to keep them updated. The impact was excellent. All of a sudden I had pharmacists readily available to track local prescribing, happy to put stock on their shelves for me with new products, and supporting my cause in their capacity on local prescribing groups.

Here's my 5 top reasons to work with retail chemists.

1.A pharmacist who builds up confidence in you over time 'will' reveal prescribing patterns of local Doctors to you. they will often be able to tell you instantly who is prescribing what products for which indications.

2.When you are promoting newer products, perhaps not stocked by the pharmacist, all your hard work can go to waist when the patient turns up at the pharmacy, only to find there's no stock....a quick call to the GP and your script is changed to a competitor which is in stock! a solid relationship with your pharmacist may enable you to persuade the pharmacist to order your new product in, or perhaps call the GP to confirm they will be using it after your call so that they can stock up.

3.A pharmacist well versed in the benefits of your product can instil confidence in the patient which may stop the patient returning to the GP and asking to change back to and older product.

4.Good rapport with a pharmacist can often generate access to tough GPs who they may be friendly with.

5.Many pharmacists are now key figures in local Health groups, holding positions on PCTs and having influence over general prescribing decision in your area.

Ultimately it's pretty boring and pointless making calls for which you perceive no or little benefit. With a little extra thought into providing retail pharmacists with a valuable service up front, you can build that emotional back account to provide a healthy return.

Good luck.

Protection dog training - Frequently Asked Questions

Is a protection dog mean?

A well trained protection dog is social with everyone. A well trained protection dog does not interpret situations to show aggression, but rather waits for his owners command before using force.

Will a protection dog also be a watchdog and bark at everyone who comes to my door?

This depends on the training. A good trainer can develop a dogs natural tendencies to customize the training to your situation.

Is a protection dog good to live in the house?

Dogs trained for protection such as German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Rottweilers are very adaptable and are just as capable living in an apartment as they are on a ranch. Regardless of where they live they should get adequate exercise.

Will a protection dog be good with my kids?

Some dogs are better than others with kids. Work with a qualified trainer to make sure that your dog will be fine with your kids. It is also important to note that children should be taught proper dog etiquette and should be supervised when around any dog.

Will a protection dog bite someone without my command?

A well trained protection dog will bite only on command. Unfortunately, there are many dog trainers who do a sub-par training job with protection dogs. Make sure you are getting your protection dog from a reputable trainer

How much does a protection dog cost?

If you buy a trained dog the cost will vary greatly. Factors will be age of dog, titles the dog has earned, look of the dog, amount of training, etc. A young dog with basic training can be bought for a few thousand while a dog with working titles and extensive additional training may cost $20,000 and up.

I dont have any particular threats. Should I get a protection dog?

Many people that purchase protection dogs havent had break-ins or stalkers or previous violent attacks. They value the benefits of a great pet who would be able to handle a violent situation were it to ever arise. People that shouldnt get a protection dog are people that want to use them as an offensive weapon. These dogs should only be owned by responsible, mature people who want the dogs as a crime deterrent and last line of defense.

Are there specific laws that deal with protection dogs?

Yes. Certain cities require a special registration for protection dogs. Certain areas also have breed specific legislation which deals with restrictions for certain breeds. Check with your city and county offices for specific laws and ordinances.

Author Ty Brown is a renowned dog trainer whose training adventures and clients have taken him to 18 states and 5 countries to teach others how to properly train their dogs. Go to dogbehavioronline.com for more dog training articles, advice, tips, and answers from a professional dog trainer.
